Kenny is in high demand for sessions in LA. Depending on the style of music he will certainly be among the first three guys to be called (if not the first). Any intelligent drummer would know better than to diss his PEERS, when his reputation is so important. I find your claim very hard to believe.
Kenny attended the Montreal Drum Fest as a spectator in 2004. When Virgil was on stage you could see his jaw drop and Kenny later on made an enthusiastic speech on how great it was to be around all these fantastic drummers.
It seems that you have a dislike for Mr. Aronoff which is based on false judgment calls. If reads your post he could probably refute just about anything you mentioned. I am afraid that it's not just a matter of opinion, but also true facts that have simply been ignored.
One would be surprised by the fact that SOME of those so called "technical masturbaters" can make the music breath REALLY WELL! and actually have a nice pocket and feel to boot. One just has to listen to more than a few clinic clips or some "over the top" fusion recording by the particular artist to formulate a factual and reasonable opinion.

I will say that when I saw Mr. Loaf on VH1 Storytellers some time ago, his drumr [name?] did a great job, very complimentery for the genre.
Kenny is a pop/rock session ace, so what. He's good AT WHAT HE DOES, or he wouldn't get those calls. But, not everyone is going to like everyone/anyone. No biggie. I enjoy lisytening to some of his work. But there are also players I listen to much more. No biggie again. /;c)
But, & not un-like myself, sounds like you have some issues [ya think?! ;cp] with a lot of pop music in general... [img]wink.gif[/img]

Billy Cobham couldn't groove as hard as Kenny Aronoff in a rock track to save his life. Nor would he want to.
Kenny's groove is amazing. It's not my thing, but I know he get's many calls from the same people who can and sometimes do call Vinnie Colaiuta or Steve Gadd if they needed to. But they call Kenny. Why? I don't think it's because he sucks. I'm sure if Vince got the call to play with Melissa he would in a heartbeat. There's more drumming on that gig than let's say Faith Hill, which he was doing for the past few years.

You must also realize that Kenny and Billy are active in different styles of music. Could Billy play for the artists Kenny has? For the most part, NO. No pop producer will want to hear the majority of what Billy has to offer. Solid 2+4 drumming is what is required here. Next: I really doubt Kenny ever claimed to play with Mahavishnu. That's not his cup of tea and is certainly beyond his "comfort zone". I am not protecting Kenny like he is my favourite drummer, but please don't compare apples with oranges here.
Essentially it is like comparing athletes of different sports and critisizing them for not being as good as player x/y. See my point?
You can have your opinion, but any knowledgable drummer will tell you that a lot of your arguments rest on shaky foundations.
It's interesting to hear Billy and Kenny mentioned in the same sentence. I'm not sure if there is a Kenny Aronoff in Bizarro World that's completely horrible, but the Kenny I saw did a pretty respectable version of the groove to Mahavishnu's 'Vital Transformation'. Was it Billy? No, but who cares? I get a little tired of hearing folks compare this person's playing to another person's with dogmatic statements that one is inferior to the other. You either like it or you don't, but when talking of players of this caliber with a proven, winning track record you skate on thin ice saying they suck.

Altho I also don't appreciate the guys who employ reverse snobbery, i.e., one's who like slipping in the idea that guys who have a lot of chops used in a musical fashion are somehow unfashionable, because that to me is also complete & utter BullShedd; but it may not be that KA was being deliberately nasty towards guys like BC & such.
